Learn More From Our Elmhurst Dentist About How To Manage Cold Sores

No one wants to deal with a cold sore, we get it. However, these pesky sensitive spots are a reality for many, many people.

So, what is the best course of action when you’re living cold sores? Our Elmhurst dentists are here to help you answer that question!

Cold sores are a result of the HSV-1 virus. Some people with HSV-1 will never show symptoms, others only break out once, and still others experience recurrent symptomology. HSV-1 is very common in the United States, and worldwide; some people are carriers without even knowing it.

HSV-1 is spread through kissing, as well as sharing utensils, drinks, and lip products. It is especially important for you to refrain from doing these things when you have active cold sore, as this is when HSV-1 is at its most viral.

Cold sores often start off as tender, red, and sensitive bumps. As they progress, and start to heal, they will scab over. Try not to pick at the lesions as they progress. Not only does this delay the healing process, it can also lead to scar tissue.

There are over-the-counter creams and gels that can help nourish the affected skin and minimize sensitive. Additionally, ice and Aloe Vera gel work to sooth painful fever blisters.

Environmental triggers can prompt a period of outbreak. If you are under increased stress, or dealing with hormonal changes, you may find that cold sores pop up. Whole-body illness, like the flu or a cold, can also kick off a period of cold sore development. You may be surprised to learn that too much sun exposure can also put you at risk; so, make sure you’re wearing hats and using SPF every day.

We know that it can be stressful to see a cold sore when you look in the mirror, but one of the best things that you can do in this situation is to stay calm and take care of yourself. Take care of yourself by hydrating, using topical creams and pain-management products, and, as much as possible, leave the sore alone.
