Get More Information From Our Elmhurst Dentist About The Dangers Of Plaque

When you minimize the amount of plaque and bacteria in your mouth, you allow your smile to stay as healthy as possible. The problem is, bacteria are always building up on your dental and gum tissues! What does this mean? What can you do about it?

Our Elmhurst dentist office is here to help you answer these questions, so keep reading to learn more!

1. What do bacteria do in my mouth?

We all have bacteria in our mouths, none of us are totally bacteria-free! And the problem is that while bacteria sit in our mouths, they actually grow and multiply. Harmful oral bacteria love to feed on the foods and drinks that we consume (especially those high in carbohydrates and sugars). When these bacteria consume foods and produce more bacteria, they let off acids that weaken your teeth and gums. So you really want to A) minimize the number of bacteria in your mouth, and B) prevent existing bacteria from multiplying as much as possible.

2. How do I protect my mouth?

There are many different things that you can do to discourage bacteria.

A) Make sure to clean your mouth as your dentist tells you to—brushing, flossing, and seeing your dental team for regularly scheduled dental cleanings.

B) During the day make sure to drink enough water and swish water around your mouth. When you drink water you enable healthy saliva production, which then neutralizes oral bacteria.

C) As much as possible, limit sugary foods and drinks (bacteria love these!).
